PROFESSIONAL APPLICATION GUIDE
- RUST BULLET® Automotive FORMULA

v.0608
The following Professional’s Application Guide for Rust Bullet Products
will provide you with the appropriate information to obtain
the optimum results for that professional project.
Step-by-Step Instructions for the Professional Applicator
1) Surfaces to be treated, must be clean, dry, and free of any impregnated impurities. Remove any
loose or flaking rust with a wire brush, wheel, or just power washing.
2) For pre-treatment of contaminations (as described in #1) use Rust Bullet Metal Blast. For information
regarding the benefits of using Rust Bullet Metal Blast as a pre-treatment, click on the following link;
3) Rust Bullet Automotive Formula has the consistency of about 50 wt motor oil. For the best application
results, we recommend using a primer gun with a 1.7 - 2.0 tip.
4) A
minimum of 2 coats of Rust Bullet Automotive is required. When you can touch the surface with a
gloved finger and there is no transfer of Rust Bullet from surface to glove you can proceed with a
second or subsequent coat.
5) Thin, even coats will provide the smooth, professional look and feel required for the automotive
surface. When applied too thick, the curing time will be increased and the out-gassing necessary to
the curing process may produce an undesirable orange peel or fish-eye effect.
6) Rust Bullet Automotive Formula may be top coated with Rust Bullet BlackShell for a gloss black finish
or the topcoat color of your choice. The top coat must be compatible with aluminum, such as an
acrylic lacquer, urethane, enamel, or epoxy product. Check the manufacturer’s requirements for
warranty protection. If there are specific requirements for a primer, it may be applied on top of the
Rust Bullet Automotive Formula before the chosen top coat paint.
7) Rust Bullet Automotive has a special aluminum formula to produce a smooth surface which can be
wet sanded for the optimum finish and top coated within 24-48 hours after the application of the last
coat of Rust Bullet.
8) If the application of a top coat will not be completed within the 24-48 hours after the last coat of Rust
Bullet, apply several coats of a 2-part urethane high build sandable primer over the surface within 24-
48 hrs after the application of the last coat of Rust Bullet. This will allow you to return to top coat
beyond the 24-48 hour window. The sandable primer will provide a workable surface for removal of
imperfections and sanding to a smooth finish.
9) Rust Bullet Automotive Formula is ready to use right from the can, The longer you stir Rust Bullet with
a wood stirring stick the more homogenized it will become. The stirring process will take
approximately three minutes by the clock. Do not use mechanical stirring devices as they will
incorporate air into the product causing it to begin curing. As you remove the stir stick from the can
the product should easily flow down the stick. If after three minutes the product is not fully
homogenized and the consistency of approximately 50 wt motor oil, repeat the stir process. 1 – 1˝
ounces of Xylene per quart of Rust Bullet Automotive Formula may be added after the second stir
process if the product is not able to freely flow through an HVLP using a primer tip of approximately
1.7 – 2.0 in size. This is not recommended as a regular application process as a thinned product will
require an additional coat to achieve the proper dft.
10) It is essential that equipment be cleaned after each application (coating) with Xylene or Toluene as
Rust Bullet Products remaining in the equipment will solidify and cannot be removed once cured. If
lacquer thinner is used to clean the equipment it is essential to remove all the lacquer thinner prior to
reuse of the equipment with Rust Bullet Products.
To ensure optimum results, also refer to the detailed
Application Guidelines available at
www.RustBullet.com.
