STRICTLY FOR THE STREETS VOL. 2:
WHITE DAWG: ANIMOSITY Got feedback? Send email to OZONEMAG@hotmail.com or mail: PO Box 677722, Orlando, FL 32867 ‘Strictly for the Streets’ is exactly that, strictly for my people in the streets ready to get up with me and any making moves in this game. No hate or envy in the blood allowed! Keep in mind the irony of the situation. See, I’m NY style, grew up with hip-hop and reggae, and honestly don’t know too much about the ‘Dirty South’ music. But, I’ve been hearing the name “White Dawg” for so damn long I felt it was time to stop sleeping on the man and what he’s doing. Wearing my New York shirt I face White Dawg, his gold grill, and Dirty South jersey. He tells me he’s going to turn me into a Southern Girl. Tune in to Clientell 91.7 FM and get ready to get ‘Dirty Dirty’ - you’re ridin’ with Mercedes and White Dawg, and this is how we get down. OZONE: Let everyone know where you’re from, and how you got started in the music game. WHITE DAWG: I was born in Alabama, moved to Ft. Lauderdale when I was 13 and moved to Orlando 2 1/2 years ago. I started back in ‘91 DJing down south with Jam Pony, we would do short raps for fun over other beats and it just kept evolving more and more into writing and producing my own music. Shit, I’ve spent a long ass time in the game, from way back then till now, it’s been a minute since I started back in high school, like 10th grade, and it just kept going till it turned into this with Dawgman and Clientell. OZONE: How did you hook up with Dawgman? WHITE DAWG: Through Pupp and Raylo, (“Peanut Butter Jelly”) who were doing shows with Dawgman. He was starting to work on the Money Hungry Compilation, so I sent him a beat CD with about 50 beats on it. He picked 12 off the CD and I had to come up here for 2-3 weeks working on the comp. Dawgman told me I should just come on up to Orlando and get down. I liked the vibe and was ready for a change from Ft. Lauderdale. We were on the same tip, making the same moves, trying to get to the same places. So, I moved up, got in the studio, did “FL Boy,” with Pastor Troy, and then worked on the “Animosity,” album. We’ve already sold about 3,000 units just in Orlando over the past few months, and have been approached by Def Jam South, Epic, and EMI. But I’m not looking for a deal, I want to go the independent route. Independently you have control and know it gets done right. We’re independent, me and D, we’re about the streets. We go out there and pull it right out the trunk. The last label I was with, I always had somebody over me telling me how to do things, and I don’t like that. This time we’re going to make sure that shit gets done right. If it takes 5 years, 5 months, or 5 weeks we’re gonna be out there doing it and were going to keep doing it! Knockin’ on the muthafuckin’ door till them bitches answer! OZONE: How exactly are you involved with Clientell? WHITE DAWG: Me and Dawgman are 50/50. I deal with a lot of production and engineering and Dawgman does a lot of the CEO action, were just trying to make this thing happen. Where I’m weak, he’s strong, and where he’s weak I’m strong. OZONE: I see a lot of support for Clientell events, especially the radio station. WHITE DAWG: As far the radio is concerned, we’re playing artists that most people don’t really get a chance to hear. If we think it’s tight and not getting the love it deserves, than we’re going to break it. The radio plays a big factor in this area. If major radio stations aren’t playing a certain artist, then they can’t show BDS spins so major labels can’t pick them up. Orlando doesn’t get represented on a nationwide level. But we can kind of bypass it with Clientell Radio. We get our music out there and other artists out there and give them spins. Now, people are going out to these record stores asking for certain CDs, so now the stores are having to carry these artists they wouldn’t have otherwise. Now, these guys are able to make money selling records, which will make the game last longer and give us all here in Orlando a chance to make some shit happen. We slang from the trunk, from mix CDs (that’s where it all started) to albums, we’re out there getting it however we can, just like you are. OZONE: I see a new label, a new rapper, a new everything every time I turn around. What’s making Clientell so successful? WHITE DAWG: We’re doing the music game the hard way. We’re going to make some mistakes, but we’re going to learn from them and not make the same mistakes twice. Other artists might jump on someone else’s track and blow up, but when the radio is gone and the labels stop pushing them, they don’t know what to do in the music business. If we come up from the bottom like this, slingin’ out of the trunk and getting our own distribution deal, no matter what happens with the radio or record label we’re gonna be straight. That’s what Master P did, that’s what Cash Money was doing back in the day. We’re trying to follow that same route, but learn from what they did and the mistakes they made. OZONE: Why the title ‘ANIMOSITY’ for your album? WHITE DAWG: The haters hate to see a player doing it, they got animosity for us but that just makes us bring it harder. OZONE: I feel that! I see you produced & wrote your entire album. Who else have you produced for? WHITE DAWG: Pastor Troy, Guru from Gang Starr, Thrill the Playa from 69 Boyz, Skull Duggery from No Limit, Slip-n-Slide, Grill, Redd Dogg (the remix of “Sittin’ on 22s,” SOON!). I’ve worked with nearly everybody locally one way or another, production or rapping. I’d really like to work with Too Short, and I’m doing a track for Pastor Troy’s new album right now. As far as the style from up North, I respect them but they’re just different from what we’re trying to do. I try to take a lil’ something of what they’re doing up North and mix it with what we’re doing, with a Down South flava. OZONE: What projects are you currently working on? WHITE DAWG: “Bonafide,” is the new album. I’m in the studio grindin’ so it should be ready by the end of the year. The Game Runner Compilation is in the works, and Dawgman’s doing a movie, “The Get Crunk Fest,” which is gonna be tight, it’s off the chain! We’re gonna keep pushing that “Animosity,” album for the next year till “Bonafide,” comes out. We’re gonna be out there hard, just keep making noise. We just finished a deal with F.Y.E. to get our products in all of their 1200 stores, and we have similar deals with Music Land and Sam Goody nationwide. We have the distribution lined up, so now we have to follow up with heavy street promotion to get the name out there. Alright, alright... now I’m listening to the Animosity album and I’m actually recognizing half these songs on here from either the radio or the club. I remember seeing White Dawg perform at The Awards Show and how much energy and stage presence he had, and how wild he is! I can’t believe I was sleeping on this Southern Boy, especially since the entire state of Florida and beyond is already up on him! You can listen to White Dawg every Monday - Saturday 5-7 PM on 91.7 FM. Call the station at 407-295-8051 to request White Dawg’s hits like, “Sittin’ on 22’s,” “Trust Me,” and the ladies’ favorite, “Pop A Pill.” When you hear it, you’ll know why! Visit him online, www.WHITEDAWG.com for more info, or to listen and/or order “Animosity.” - Mercedes |
