| Right now I have a 67 bug with bags on the back and Only airshocks on the front... They ride well but I want it to be faster. The shocks are incredibly slow! I have 3/8s lines, Viair450, 5 gallon tank, 3/8 valves, and the shocks have a 1/8 port. The shocks ride well but not fast enough... I rercently put my hands on a set of free air cylinders with a 1/4 port and a 1" bore thru. It will be much faster but It seems like the ride will be much more harsh! How can I go about softening the ride? maybe a seperate resevoir somewhere? I feel like if i add a larger resvoir to make the ride softer then I would slow the cylinders down... I assume i would have to trial and error the size of the resevoir. It's gunna be either fast or smooth but not both right? Ill have to find a happy medium. Would I need to run shocks with this or not? Am I wasting my time with the conversion or not? Don't hate on the newbie too much please. |

| Re: Air Cylinders Vs Airshocks SLAMMED, what do you think?? From what i hear the cylinders are a harsh ride and honestly i havent seen any installed or dealt with them. is a standard bag not possible in the bug? |

| Re: Air Cylinders Vs Airshocks It's possible but VERY little room and TONS of fabbing needed... It's not beneath me but I prefer a simpler route. What air pressure is needed with 3/8 lines for it to be fairly fast on a small car like mine. I've seen 3/8s lines move faster than mine. I'm thinking it the restriction of the 1/8 fitting on the airshock. |

Air cylinders are like hydraulics but instead of fluid moving the ram up and down its air, but they work nearly the same way. Air shock is just that a shock observer that has a load adjustment. To make you bag faster Go with independent air valves (not a manifold valve set) ½ inch every thing (valves, line, fittings, tank) Mount your valve close to the bags And you need to get bags upfront…. air shock will limit the air flow and they won’t be very fast The bad thing about your VW is that it is going to be hard to find any thing that will bolt in I don’t think they make a kit for you front suspension, and if you don’t have $3,500 for the compete custom frame then your stuck making a kit your self or finding someone that is making kits or will make a kit for you. |

| Re: Air Cylinders Vs Airshocks Oh there are several manufacturers of kits out there... I just made my own manifold but they are all independant. Like i said I have all 3/8 lines and only about 18 inchs of line between the valve and the airshock. Moving the valve closer prolly wouldnt help that much would it. The rear on the other hand there are about 10 feet of line between my rear bags and the valves... (Im satisfied for now with my rear speed) So the trick to speed is big lines, valves close to the bags and thats pretty much it. I still wanna know if its worth the trouble to switch to a air cylinder (the only difference is the port size and interior volume) and will i need a shock? |

| Registered User | Re: Air Cylinders Vs Airshocks Shocks are for ride quality, I have a 63 Impala on air/nitrogen and I don’t have shock on the front but I do run shocks on the back. Shocks will eliminate the bounce or the waviness of the air bag. If you have ever been in an old car with bad shock or in a Lincoln or Cadillac and you go over a bump and you get the waviness like you where in a boat well shock help that from happing. I have never put in air cylinders but I know the basic concept of them. I don’t know the ride or how well they perform. It sounds like if you change from air shock to bags or cylinders that will fix your problem in theory. If you are comfortable will how the back is lifting than don’t change any of your other components, just change out the air shock first and if then you want it to be faster than start changing your air components. |
