Exclamation fuel guage

I need some help on figuring out what is wrong with this gauge . When i fill the tank up it shows almost a half a tank of gas. I have replaced the cluster and it is doing the same thing , so i dont think it is it . I unplugged a wire that had like a weatherpack connector , coming from the top the tank , and the gauge went all the way to full . When i plugged it back up it went back down to a half a tank . What could i do to fiqure it out . Thanks.

Yes the floats can get stuck, broken, and become unable to move. I would also drop the tank and replace the float assembly. them are my thoughts..

Lightbulb Gas floats and guages.

Yes the floats sometimes gives your problems.
1. The cluster you changed and the sending unit mounted on the gas tank need to be the same. Sometimes even in the same year or cars and models manufactures have options like GS or SS or LTD etc, and have a high performance unit. So they will not communicate properly to each other. So if your sure they are the same great.
2. Next is the float and sending unit. If a car ever has sat for a long periods of time your gas tank will accumulate sediment in the bottom. And when you run the gas tank to fumes several times that tends to affect the sending unit and or the float. If your hopping the ASS END well that is an issue to consider also.
SOOOOOOOOOOO if you are going to tackle removing the tank and replacing the float and sending, It may be a good idea to park the ride for just a bit and drain, dry, inspect for holes, replace parts and paint it all.
If you are juiced then that much better to detail the ASS END with a high gloss black tank and some chrome straps

Thanks guys. I didn't know about the sending units be different, but i think there the same because it is doing the same thing it did with the other cluster .As far hopping the rear, I do not do that ,dont need creases in the quarters.I was going to clean it up while i was under it . A new tank probably would not be a bad idea ,they are only like $100 anyways and with it being 20 years old also ,it could use a new one.

Just remember that a new tank may not have a new sending unit in it...

I am going to drop the tank today and put a new sending unit it . I was going to get a new tank but i had to replace most of the front end on the the car this weekend ,so funds for a new tank are not there. The good news about having to replace the front end is i got a chance to clean it up and repaint it all and now that i am dropping the tank ,i can clean the rear end up to. What will be the best way to clean out the inside of the tank to get any trash that might be in there out ? What more fun could you have on a vaction from work.
