Well i got the tank out ,after filling up two gas cans and still having gas in it . I decided to hook up the new sending unit before putting it all back together and the gauge is still not working right . I set the float on it to the bottom (as if was in a empty tank) and it read empty . When i put it to the top (as if was in a full tank) it only reads a half a tank. So this means it has to be the gauge not working properly , right?

SO TELL ME PLEASE, IS YOUR TANK METAL???
WHAT DOES THE GROUNDING WIRE AT THE FRAME LOOK LIKE???
WAS THE SENDING UNIT FULLY SCREWED ON OR MOUNTED??
DID IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE JUMPING AROUND WHEN YOU TOUCHED IT??
WAS THERE TWO PEOPLE AVAILABLE SO YOU COULD DO THAT??

I WOULD REALLY WONDER IF THE THE ISSUE IS ANOTHER BAD SENDING UNIT OR MALFUNFUNCTION OR GROUNDING OUT?

The reason why is if it were the guage it wouldn't work again.

Electrical issues are pain in the _ _ _ but tracing and patience are the key, OR JUST GET A BIG HAMMER

Please reply on where are with this and I'll get my electrical troubleshooter out.
Marco

The tank is metal. It came with a new ground wire . I sanded down the frame where it grounds to ,to ensure a good ground . I pulled the cluster apart yesterday thinking the printed circuit was maybe bad and wired the gauge up seperate . There is three prongs on the back of the gauge itself , a ground , a power , and a wire going to the sending unit. I ran all new wires ,except the wire to the sending unit and still had the same problem. THe gauge is only readin a little over a quarter of a tank . I know i did not fill it completely up after i put it back together ,but i put $20 in it , sould have a least given 3/4 of a tank .

Okay bro, I'll get right on it and get back to you tonight. I'm at work checking my e-mail. I do believe that we have a four hour difference from Alaska to you so I will be as quick as I can to get back to you.
(1984 Cutlass)?? is what i'll be looking under.
