Speaking of mazdas, has anyone here ever worked on an import to give it a little more pump in the gas pedal? guy at Nopi said that if i put a header and exhaust that it freed up these import engines a good bit???

what you need to know about imports, its no different thatn any other engine in theory, a engine is a giant air pump, you pull air in, you push air out, the more air you can push in and out the more power you get, but besides a header and intake and exhaust, your going to need the fuel, which means a upgraded fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel rail and injectors.

here is my recommendations

intake, header, catback, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel rail, fuel injectors, cam gears, ignition system that utilizes an external coil(msd makes a nice one)and underdrive pullies, that should hold you over for a while and make a good increase in horsepower. cam gear tuning is a litttle tricky because of the Dohc engine. thats probably the list of the best bolt on performace pieces to use. its best to know what you want to do fromt he start because you want to try to get parts that compliment each other.
