What's the best way to cut coils? After they're cut, do you have to 'flatten' the cut side so that it'll sit flush in the cup? If so, how do you do that? Heat and bend? Help! I've only got basic tools lol

A cutting torch is the best way to cut them. As for flattening them out I have never heard of, just get you some deep cups..

a torch is the quickest way........... using some type of large saw is the best way, it does not heat the coils up. heating them up will ruin the rating on them, so if you use a torch cut it good and smoothe......... dont rush it, just get it cherry hot and cut it.
Also you can submerge most of the coil in a nice cold bucket of water, then cut it. this will keep the heat down some. But dont use water to cool off the freshly cut section, that will make it brittle.

get a bench grinder ,take the cover off one side ,then buy a metal cutting blade, clamp the grinder down and go to town with it, it takes a little while but it does the trick, poor mans way.

This is the best way right here. If you don't have access to a chopsaw you can do what the other guy said and use a cutting disc on an angle grinder or if you have a circular saw you can get cutting disc for them also. I would stay away from the torches though. Remember to put the cut part down and the cups on the flat part.
