Question What do I do?

Yo,

I recently acquired a 1987 olds cutlass cruiser, (station wagon) and I want to put air suspension on the rear axle.

The car is front wheel drive and the rear suspension sports the old stock air assist shocks. There are springs located just inside the shocks, do I replace those with bags and replace the old shocks with new ones?

This may give you a better idea of what I mean:

What do I do?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Cool man, Any suggestions for brands or bags, this stuff is kinda new to me.

Also, The stock shocks can be filled with air for support when hauling, will those be okay to use with the bags?

Thanks for your help.

man, i dunno..

my first thought would be to ditch them and get regular shocks to replace them with,

but

if you leave all the air out of them, they will just act as anti-extension devices..

so its up to you..

as far as bags, Contitech, slams, firestones, are all good brands,
I'd say get some 2600's back there..

I've been looking around, how does this sound: airlift 2b7 Gen II extreme with a single 1/2" port, (I don't need speed fills and drops).

But thats as far as I've gone, suggestions for valves, fittings, hoses, compressors would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I noticed that the exhaust pipe runs very close to where one of the springs will be located... I don't think that heat and bags mix well, is there something I can do short of re-routing the exhaust? Maybe a heat shield of some kind?

I am fairly knowledgeable in the automotive area, but I've never made this sort of modification before. I have access to any tools I'll need, is this something I will be capable of doing?

Thanks for you time...

... cause people need to love their rides.

True... heat and bags don't mix... i had the same problem when i bagged the rear of my cutlass... the exhaust on the drivers side was like 1/4" from the bag and it melted a hole in it within a week... what i done was simply cut off my exhaust about 5" before the axle... that was only a temp fix... i had it like that for 3-4 months and just 2-3 weeks ago i finally put the exhust back on... what i done was cut a small notch in the exhaust coming out of the muffler and bent it over a little, then welded the seam back up... then welded the exhaust together where i prevousely cut it off... haven't had a problem since.

A heat sheild might work, but if yours is anything like mine in the rear, you'll need to heat it up with a torch and bend it over a little, or cut a notch and bedt it over and weld it back up to get the exhaust as far from the bag as possible.

Thanks Jason,

I'm going to get that thing lifted and see what I can do.
